(a) Registered Companies:
As on 31st March, 2021, the total number of companies registered in India was 21,51,349.
Out of the 21,51,349 registered companies:
• 13,44,857 were active companies,
• 7,58,350 companies were closed,
• 2,266 companies were assigned dormant status as per Section 455 of the Companies Act, 2013,
• 6,893 were under liquidation, and
• 38,983 companies were in the process of being struck-off.
(b) Active Companies:
As on 31st March, 2021, the total number of active companies in India was 13,44,857.
Out of the 13,44,857 active companies:
• 13,36,234 were limited by shares,
• 8,317 were limited by guarantee, and
• 306 were unlimited companies.
Out of the 13,36,234 companies limited by shares:
• 65,942 were public limited companies, and
• 12,33,768 were private limited companies.
Among the private limited companies, 36,524 were one person companies (OPCs).
Among the public limited companies, 6,740 were listed companies.
(c) Closed Companies:
As on 31st March, 2021, the total number of closed companies in India was 758,350.
Out of the 758,350 closed companies:
• 11,059 companies were liquidated/dissolved,
• 700,197 companies were declared defunct (and hence struck-off after issuance of notice u/s 248),
• 27,094 companies were amalgamated/ merged with other companies,
• 15,125 companies were converted to Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), and
• 4,875 were converted to LLP and dissolved.
(d) One Person Companies (OPCs)
As of 31st March, 2021, a total number of 36,524 One Person Companies (OPCs) were registered in India with a collective authorized capital of INR 1,170.68 crores.
During the financial year 2020-21, a total of 8,949 OPCs were registered in India. Maharashtra has registered 1428 (15.95%) OPCs followed by Delhi with 861 (9.62%).
During March 2021, a total number of 1,077 OPCs were registered with a collective authorized capital of INR 41.92 crore.
(e) Foreign Companies:
Out of the total 4,979 registered foreign companies in India, 3,334 were active as on 31st March, 2021.
A total of 83 new foreign companies were registered in India during the financial year 2020-21: Maharashtra (26), Delhi (16), Karnataka (10), Tamil Nadu (9), Gujarat (4), Haryana (4), Uttar Pradesh (3), West Bengal (3), Telangana (2), Andhra Pradesh (1), Bihar (1), Himachal Pradesh (1), Odisha (1), Rajasthan (1) and Uttarakhand (1).
(f) Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs):
In India, a total of 201,754 LLPs were active as on 31st March, 2021.
168,683 active LLPs (83.61%) have obligation of contribution less than or equal to INR 5 lakhs each; and only 6,387 LLPs (3.17%) have obligation of contribution above INR 1 crore each.
During the financial year 2020-21, a total of 42,185 LLPs were registered with collective obligation of contribution of INR 6,294.19 crore.
During March, 2021, a total of 4,742 LLPs were registered with a collective obligation of contribution of INR 522.77 crore.
(g) State-wise Active Companies:
As on 31st March, 2021, the total number of active companies in India was 13,44,857.

(h) Monthly New Companies:
In March, 2021, a total of 17,324 new companies were registered with collective authorised capital of INR 4,145.05 crores. (Out of 17,324 new companies, 17,216 companies were registered as companies limited by shares and 108 companies were registered as companies limited by guarantees.)
