Statistics on Number of Companies in India as on 30 Sep 2020

Registered Companies:

As on 30th September, 2020, the total number of companies registered in India was 2,063,938.

Out of the 2,063,938 registered companies:

• 1,263,824 were active companies,

• 750,929 companies were closed,

• 2,239 companies were assigned dormant status as per the Companies Act, 2013,

• 6,786 were under liquidation, and

• 40160 companies were in the process of being struck-off.

Active Companies:

As on 30th September, 2020, the total number of active companies in India was 1,263,824.

Out of the 1,263,824 active companies:

• 1,255,725 were limited by shares,

• 7,792 were limited by guarantee, and

• 307 were unlimited companies.

Out of the 1,255,725 companies limited by shares:

• 64,804 were public limited companies, and

• 1,190,921 were private limited companies.

Among the private limited companies, 31,884 were one person companies (OPCs).

Among the public limited companies, 6,776 were listed companies.

Closed Companies:

As on 30th September, 2020, the total number of closed companies in India was 750,929.

Out of the 750,929 closed companies:

• 11,002 companies were liquidated/dissolved,

• 694,509 companies were declared defunct (and hence struck-off after issuance of notice u/s 248),

• 26,294 companies were amalgamated/ merged with other companies,

• 14,249 companies were converted to Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), and

• 4,875 were converted to LLP and dissolved.

In September, 2020, a total of 16,641 new companies were registered with collective authorised capital of INR 1,680.82 crores.

Foreign Companies:

Out of the total 4,940 registered foreign companies in India, 3,378 were active as on 30th September, 2020.

A total of 31 new foreign companies were registered in India during July, 2020 to September, 2020: Maharashtra (13), Delhi (5), Gujarat (3), Tamil Nadu (3), Andhra Pradesh (1), Uttar Pradesh (1), Haryana (1), Rajasthan (1) and rest (3).

Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs):

In India, a total of 178,254 LLPs were active as on 30th September, 2020.

148,382 active LLPs (83.24%) have obligation of contribution less than or equal to INR 5 lakhs each; and only 5,676 LLPs (3.18%) have obligation of contribution above INR 1 crore each.
