Section 20C Specific Relief Act 1963: Expeditious Disposal of Suits

Section 20C (Expeditious disposal of suits) under Chapter II "Substituted performance of contracts, etc." of Part II (Specific Relief) of the Specific Relief Act, 1963

❝Notwithstanding anything contained in the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 (5 of 1908), a suit filed under the provisions of this Act shall be disposed of by the court within a period of twelve months from the date of service of summons to the defendant:

 Provided that the said period may be extended for a further period not exceeding six months in aggregate after recording reasons in writing for such extension by the court.❞

Notes:

The Specific Relief Act, 1963 was amended by from time to time by:
- the Repealing and Amending Act, 1964 (Act No. 52 of 1964);
- the Repealing and Amending Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974);
- the Specific Relief (Amendment) Act, 2018 (Act No. 18 of 2018).
