Department of Consumer Affairs, vide Notification G.S.R. 1266(E) dated the 13th October 2017, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), and in supersession of the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 1987, except Chapter IV A of the said rules, and the Bureau of Indian Standards (Appointment, Terms and Conditions of Service of Director General) Rules, 1987 except as respects things done or omitted to be done before such supersession, has made and notified the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 2017. The Rules came into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette (i.e. 13th October, 2017).
Earlier, a new Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) Act 2016 which was notified on 22nd March, 2016, was brought into force with effect from 12th October, 2017. The Act establishes the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as the National Standards Body of India.
